Arkaroola Artists Road Trip

DSC_0147 (Medium)

June/July 2013 has been a very busy ‘art’ month for me. Late June to early July, I spent 10 spectacular days on a road trip to ‘Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary’ with 9 fellow artists, lead by wonderful local artist, Joy Engelman. The scenery was breathtaking and inspirational and the company was fabulous. From the scenic flight over the majestic ranges and magical Lake Fromme, climbing Griselda’s Hill, 4WD tour on the ridge top tracks to the awesome Stiller’s Lookout, observing the constellations in the crystal clear skies from the observatory dome, to the guided Aboriginal cultural walk with local elder ‘Sharpie’, every moment was an experience of a lifetime!  I hope to work on a totally new body of work, inspired by this amazing, deeply moving and profoundly spiritual experience of our ancient landscape.  Follow this link to see all the photos from our Arkaroola journey. /www.janetonks.com.au/galleries/photography-gallery/

DSC_0050 (Medium)Pictured above, the two Janes’. Myself, Jane Tonks with artist and friend, Jane Tyack Howarth at the Print Profiles Exhibition opening at Cowra Regional Gallery in June 2013.

It was a great honour to be invited to participate in the ‘Print Profiles: Printmakers from the Region’ exhibition, in the company of highly skilled printmakers including Tim Winters, Lyn Winters, Judy Thatcher, Bill Moseley and David Stanley. The exhibition continues until the 28th July, so there is still time to catch it if you enjoy the intricate art of printmaking.

Artstart Grant Period comes to a close

What a fabulous year! I have been exceptionally fortunate to have been a 2012/2013 recipient of the highly prized ‘Artstart’ grant, awarded from the Australia Council for the Arts.  The $10,000 grant has enabled me to get my arts practice up and running, including the purchase of an etching press, digital SLR camera, skylights for my studio, easel, printing of portfolios, business cards, promotional material, consultancy advise and also funding towards my recent art trip to Arkaroola! This grant has been an enormous boost to enable me to seriously develop a career as a visual artist. I would encourage any emerging artist who wants to make art their career path to look into the grant opportunities available to recent arts graduates.  Follow this link to Australia Council for the Arts website:  http://www.australiacouncil.gov.au/

Finalist in the Clifton Art Awards – Canberra Region

DSC_0380 (Medium)On July 4th 2013, I was invited to an award evening to announce the winner of the Cliftons Art Prize – Canberra Region, an acquisitive prize which promotes and encourages emerging artists. Although I was not the winner, I was privileged to be one of only 10 finalists chosen from the region. I am pictured above with my finalist oil painting entry. I would encourage emerging artists to make sure that you enter this wonderful competition in 2014.

And more to come in July……

More art opportunities coming up this month: Taste Orange is again holding their ‘Frost Fest’ exhibition from July 30 to August 4 2013 at Orange Function Centre.  Colour City Creatives will also host an exhibition by their member at the ‘Barracks’, East Fork, Peisley Street Orange from July 30 to August 4, 2013.  Hope to see you at one or both of these exhibitions to celebrate the art of the region.
